        A principio de los años 50, el Padre Antonio Magallanes encabezó la idea de tener en Cananea un Asilo de Ancianos. Se iniciaron actividades para pedir donativos entre los pobladores de Cananea. Las señoras Martha Ashe y Jackie Lester, ambas americanas residentes de esta ciudad, fueron de las principales promotoras del proyecto quienes con su entusiasmo motivaron a muchas otras damas para participar en estas colectas. Los esfuerzos de un gran número de personas fueron premiados cuando al fin se vieron paredes y techumbre listos para recibir a los primeros ancianitos que habitaron este Asilo. Quedó situado aparte de todo bullicio en un lugar que antes fuera una huerta de manzanas y fue encomendado a San José, patrono del hogar y la familia. Llegaron a cuidar de los ancianitos, las hermanas del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús quienes con admirable dedicación, a la fecha ven por cada uno de sus alimentos, aseo, atención médica y más importante que lo material es el auxilio espiritual que les brindan hasta sus últimos días. En los terrenos del Asilo se edificaron también una linda Capilla y la casa que hoy en día es la habitación de las Religiosas.

        El Comité Particular de Caridad fundado en 1941, agrupación de damas voluntarias, es el que tiene a su cargo el sustento del Asilo obteniendo recursos con actividades y donaciones y con la ayuda invaluable de la población que participa directa o indirectamente en esta importante labor. Se le da asilo gratuito a estos seres que sufren en su carencia económica y en su soledad. Hay capacidad para asilar a 20 ancianitos como máximo siendo nuestra ambición poder ampliar las instalaciones para aumentar el cupo y tener mayor comodidad.

        In the early 1950’s Father Antonio Magallanes decided to materialize the idea of having a shelter or rest home for the elderly in Cananea. Activities were soon under way to ask for donations among the people in town. Mrs. Martha Ashe and Mrs. Jackie Lester, both Americans living in Cananea at the time, were among the main promoters of this project who with their great enthusiasm soon motivated many other ladies to participate in the fund-raising activities. The efforts of many people were rewarded when at last the walls went up, the roof was set and the building was ready to receive the first elderly residents. The home was set away from the hustle and bustle of town where an apple orchard used to be and was named "Asilo de Ancianos San José" after St. Joseph, the Patron Saint of home and family. The Sisters of the order of The Sacred Heart of Jesus were invited to come and care for the elderly and with admirable dedication to this day still attend to all their needs and provide the much-desired spiritual guidance. On the grounds were also built a lovely chapel and a house where the Sisters now reside.

        The "Comité Particular de Caridad" founded in 1941, made up of lady volunteers, is responsible for the sustenance of the shelter. Our source of income comes from fund-raising activities, donations and the very valuable direct or indirect participation of the Cananea residents in all our projects. Free-of-charge shelter is offered to the elderly in need of companionship and a place to live.The facilities now house a maximum of 20 residents and our ambition is to improve and expand it for added room and comfort.
